Career Counselor

Overview

This position provides individualized career counseling to both full-time and part-time evening J.D. students, as well as alumni, with particular attention to the unique needs of part-time students who balance professional, academic, and family commitments.

 

The incumbent will advance the Career Office’s core objective of maximizing employment outcomes while ensuring that every student receives thoughtful, tailored guidance aligned with their professional goals.

 

The projected salary range for this position, which represents the full range of anticipated compensation

is: $75,000 to $85,000.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain an active daily counseling calendar with regular student and alumni appointments.
  • Provide counseling to J.D. students and alumni on a variety of career-related topics, including self-assessment, career trajectory, and exploration of practice areas.
  • Offer targeted support to part-time students, including flexible advising availability and strategic planning tailored to working professionals and students who balance other commitments outside of law school.
  • Provide support for programs designed for part-time student professional development, including the Professional and Academic Foundations course for evening students.
  • Review and provide substantive feedback on application materials (including resumes, cover letters, and personal statements).
  • Coach students on networking strategies, job search techniques, and identifying internships and employment opportunities.
  • Conduct mock interviews and provide performance feedback to students.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date advising notes in 12Twenty (career management database).
  • Remain current on legal hiring trends, professional development, and alternative Pathways.
  • Generate employment opportunities through proactive outreach to employers, including phone calls, events, and virtual and in-person visits.
  • Develop and advance relationships with alumni and employers through direct outreach and programming.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Educational and Practical Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree; JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school preferred, but not required.
  • 1-2 years of legal practice experience preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience in career counseling, coaching, training, or professional development strongly preferred.
