Director of Academic Support

Overview

The Director of Academic Support is responsible for supporting law students' academic success, bar readiness, and skills development through a combination of teaching, academic counseling, and programming. The position includes teaching first-year Legal Research and Writing, leading academic support and bar preparation initiatives, and working individually with students who are experiencing academic difficulty. Working closely with the Office of Academic Affairs and reporting to the Assistant Dean for Academic and Bar Support, the Director helps develop and deliver workshops, courses, and other resources focused on legal analysis, writing, exam-taking, and bar preparation strategies, while staying current on developments in legal education and the NextGen Bar Exam.

 

The projected salary range for this position, which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $90,000 to $100,000.

Responsibilities

-Teach at least one section of first-year Legal Research and Writing.

-Provide individualized academic counseling and support to students experiencing academic difficulty.

-In consultation with the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Assistant for Academic and Bar Support, develop and provide academic support, skills development, and bar preparation programming for law students and graduates.

-Design and facilitate workshops focused on legal analysis, legal writing, study strategies, exam-taking, and bar readiness.

-Work closely with the Office of Academic Affairs and the Assistant Dean for Academic and Bar Support to identify and support students in need of academic intervention, monitor student progress, and provide feedback, coaching, and referrals as appropriate.

-Assist with bar preparation initiatives, including programming related to the NextGen Bar Exam.

-Stay current on best practices, scholarship, and emerging trends in academic support, bar preparation, and legal education.

-Assist in exploring and implementing effective uses of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, in academic support and legal education.

-Support the Law School’s broader academic mission through collaboration, service, and student engagement.

-Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Educational Requirement:

JD Degree from an ABA-accredited law school with at least three or more years of relevant or transferable experience

 

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certification:

Bar membership in a US jurisdiction (may be inactive)

 

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:

  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication with both individuals and large groups
  • Interpersonal skills relevant to individualized academic counseling and coaching
  • Knowledge of learning and teaching strategies for law students and other adult learners

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Three years of teaching experience in a U.S. law school, including at least one year teaching legal writing.
  • Experience in designing and implementing bar exam review classes and materials
  • Experience working with at-risk law students
