Plumber

Overview

This position is classified as an essential position. Performs a variety of journeyman level technical duties associated with the operation, maintenance, installation, and alteration or campus plumbing, gas, and air equipment and its distribution systems. Also includes heat systems under the Building Maintenance Department’s jurisdiction. Per the collective bargaining agreement, the person filling this position must become a member of the Union within 30 days and retain membership in good standing for the duration of employment.

 


The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $36.81

Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, inspects, tests and repairs plumbing, gas and air equipment and its distribution systems in accordance with the District of Columbia plumbing and gas code requirements for the operational needs of the University.
  • Perform routine maintenance on fixtures such as snaking clogged drain lines, repairing leaking faucets, replace worn or bad fixtures, etc.
  • Must be familiar with pump operation, repair and maintenance; i.e. sewage ejectors, centrifugal pumps, sump pumps, etc.
  • Must be able to work from schematics, blue prints and/or verbal instructions.
  • Makes recommendations to immediate supervisor for materials, tools, and equipment to carry out assigned work. Suggests energy conservation measures and suggests safety measures.
  • Assists with the inventory of equipment, material, supplies and tools assigned to the plumbing shop.
  • Must be able to work independently and with minimum supervision and willing to teach others best practices.
  • Responsible for performance, completion, quantity, and quality of all work assigned, filling out daily work order requests, and keeping master charts or records as required.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned on a regular or requested basis i.e., setting up for graduation, working move-in weekend, snow removal ops, etc.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation and carry the call-back phone when scheduled. Additional duties associated while on call include, but not limited to, resetting fire alarms, resetting breakers, etc
  • Keep work vehicle and tools maintained properly. Take vehicle for oil change when scheduled, keep proper air pressure in tires, report any damage to supervisor immediately, etc.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. perferred
  • Must have the basic knowledge of all hand tools used in the plumbing trade.
  • Must have experience using augers, K-50 snake, drain camera, pipe threader, etc.
  • Must have at least (3) years’ experience as a journeyman level plumber.
  • Must have a Journey Plumbing license.
  • Must have backflow prevention certification.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and work orders.
  • Ability to write basic sentences in order to close out work orders.
  • Ability to present/pass on information to co-workers and the Facilities Service Center staff
  • Ability to perform assigned duties independently and with minimum supervision.
  • Willingness to perform within all guidelines of existing University policies and/or union contracts.
