Landscape Maintenance Technician

Overview

This position is classified as an essential position. The incumbent participates in emergencies such as, but not limited to, snow removal, storm prep and damage operations, etc. as requested. The incumbent will report to the Grounds Manager or Team Leader and assist in maintaining the campus plant life, turf, roads, parking areas, walks, exterior drains and equipment. Required to participate in emergency call backs when assigned.

 

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is up to $21.27/hr. 

Responsibilities

  • Supports lead landscape technician and seasonal support personnel on a daily basis for landscape, grounds, emergency, snow/ice maintenance and operations.
  • Performs and is responsible for applying proper industry standard practices in landscape maintenance, design /build projects, irrigation, pesticides, snow removal, landscape lighting, hardscape repairs, equipment, tool use and operation in a professional safe manner.
    Applies and is responsible for providing daily work planning, deficiencies, procedures, communication updates, and completion of reports, and forms as designated by industry standards, university policies, and government regulations.
  • Provide support, awareness, and technical oversight to other landscape workers, and temporary assigned personnel, active campus community members such as other staff, faculty, and students for special events and other university functions.
  • Assists with applying IPM practices and awareness, and following current departmental initiatives such as organic/sustainable activities in landscape management operations.
  • Ability to become proficient and safe with the operation of landscape equipment, vehicles, and different tools used for maintenance and operations.
  • Demonstrates and ensures university policy and procedures are complied with on a daily basis as an employee of the university.

Qualifications

  • A High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent 
  • 2-3 years, unless exceptional education or specialized work experience can be documented.
  • Knowledge of proper planting/ transplanting techniques for trees, shrubs and ornamentals.
  • Knowledge of plant diseases and plant pest diagnosis.
  • Knowledge of effective, safe application of pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Knowledge of proper safe operation of mowing equipment, edging, trimming, blowing, chain saw and other grounds equipment and machines.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and blueprints oriented towards horticultural projects.
  • Ability to plan and schedule work to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic.
  • Some knowledge of construction techniques and practices as applied to roads, sidewalks, storm drains concrete and asphalt projects
