Director of Advancement Services Communications

Overview

The Director of Advancement Services Communications will lead a team of content creators to plan, create, publish, disseminate, and manage Advancement Communications content for the schools and offices served by the Division of University Advancement, with the goal to drive engagement and support for the University. The Director of Advancement Services Communications works under the Executive Director of Advancement Communications, and in coordination with team members and stakeholders across campus, to leverage content that is relevant to key audiences and aligned with the objectives of University Advancement.

 

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $80,000-$100,000. 

Responsibilities

  • Oversees a team of content creators to design, develop, and distribute constituent and stakeholder communications in collaboration with University Advancement colleagues serving schools and offices, to meet their Advancement goals and ends.
  • Works with the Executive Director of Advancement Communications, the Director of Strategic Advancement Communications, and the Advancement leadership team to identify, create, and adapt University Advancement messaging to meet the needs and goals and the division while ensuring consistency across all platforms.
  • Builds cross-functional relationships with organizational stakeholders to understand and develop a focused communication program, brand and messaging.
  • Crafts high-level messaging for members of university leadership- including the President of the University, the VP of University Advancement, and other senior leaders- for their engagement with external stakeholders related to Advancement activities, ensuring messaging effectiveness and consistency.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Events in the creation of messaging and talking points for Advancement events.
  • Leads the planning, writing, and editing of publications and reports of the Division of University Advancement.
  • Collaborates in the drafting and execution of a Communications Strategy for the next comprehensive capital campaign.
  • Oversees efficient processes for the regulatory review and approval of communication materials.
  • Develops and manages the editorial calendar, and regularly checks results against stated goals and objectives.
  • Collaborates in the development of messaging to ensure consistency across content, from talking points to website, publications, social media channels and videos.
  • Creates opportunities to tell the University’s Advancement story through cross-campus collaboration.
  • Organizes and prioritizes projects in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented and rapidly changing business environment.
  • Support the Division of University Advancement in achieving its strategic and fundraising goals, as well as Campaign goals, through positive and productive interaction and collaboration with all departmental staff, University liaisons, and external constituents.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required, with a minimum of seven (7) years of professional experience working in communications or marketing, preferably in higher education, development/advancement, nonprofit fundraising, or both.
  • Excellent communication skills and as a writer and editor, having a track record of producing clean, impactful copy.
  • Exceptional knowledge of current digital and print publication trends.
  • Experience producing and managing digital content and print publications.
  • Experience managing an integrated editorial calendar for multiple projects and clients.
  • Experience working with writers and copy editors, being able to manage relationships, assignments, and work products.
  • Exceptional knowledge of AP Style.
  • Proven ability to project manage and lead a team.
  • Ability to write in different voices and styles, for a variety of target audiences.
  • Ability to generate ideas and solve problems.
  • Experience using Google Workspace applications, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and Acrobat Pro.
  • He/she will have a demonstrated ability to take initiative and be a self-starter; manage projects; determine priorities and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral skills and demonstrated effective writing skills will be required as will strong organizational and analytical skills and the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Complete proficiency in the Google Suite of products: Google Mail, Google Docs, also with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge (alumni and donor database software) or similar systems preferred but not necessary.

  • Excellent proofreading and editing skills; strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are essential.

  • Ability to prioritize work and follow general office procedures.

  • Ability to work independently, under deadlines, without close supervision.

  • Exercise self-direction in the initiation, coordination and completion of tasks; with acute attention to detail.

  • Excellent relationship-building skills; ability to work effectively with internal and external constituencies, including individuals of significant influence and affluence.

  • Possession of current and valid U.S. driver’s license appropriate to the type of university vehicle and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Driving Record (MVR) as stipulated in the Vehicle Guidelines and Procedures Manual administered through the office of Environmental Health and Safety.

  • Annual clearance of MVR check through the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.
