Laboratory Technician

Overview

Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, performs routine chemical laboratory functions including, conducting chemical durability and other chemical tests and their associated measurements; receiving and tagging chemicals and chemical wastes and maintaining the chemical inventory; maintaining deionized water systems and verifying water quality; and ordering and maintaining the required inventories of chemical and laboratory supplies. Works independently but in collaboration with other staff to support VSL research needs.

 

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $33,600 - $51,000. 

Responsibilities

  • Support operations of the VSL leach labs in compliance with the VSL Quality Assurance
    Program.
  • Perform chemical durability and other tests following established procedures. Prepare test
    vessels, assemble test configurations, initiate tests, and process samples. Maintain
    complete and accurate records of all test activities.
  • Monitor in-use laboratory equipment to ensure proper operation and identify maintenance
    needs.
  • Perform monthly calibrations of laboratory pipettes and daily calibrations of pH meters.
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks per established quality assurance procedures.
  • Manage inventory of laboratory supplies and chemicals required for routine tests and
    general laboratory needs.
  • Maintain de-ionized water systems. Verify water quality, and order/replace system
    consumables.
  • Function as the VSL Chemical Inventory Coordinator managing chemical receipts,
    distribution, and inventory updates.
  • Act as the VSL Chemical Hygiene Officer, collecting chemical wastes and coordinating
    disposal with CUA EH&S.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, materials science, engineering, or a related discipline; or
    equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of practical laboratory experience, preferably in a wet
    chemistry lab.
  • Familiarity with chemical laboratory methods including quantitative pipetting, weighing,
    titration, physical and chemical separation, and measurement of pH.
  • Experience with chemical analysis methods such as ion chromatography and optical
    spectroscopy desirable.
  • Proficiency in office productivity software and ability to quickly learn and use
    instrumentation software desirable.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to follow established laboratory and quality procedures.
  • Good oral and written communication skills for effective collaboration.
  • Strong organizational skills for scheduling duties and responsibilities.
