Head Athletic Trainer

Overview

The Athletic Department supports the academic mission of the University by providing programs and services to enable students to engage in physical activities as an integral part of the overall educational experience. Opportunities for participation are provided at the intercollegiate, club, recreational and leisure program levels. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing programs for the prevention, evaluation and rehabilitative treatment to athletes involved in various intercollegiate athletics programs at the University. Must know how to manage catastrophic sports trauma, basic life support, principles of physiology, kinesiology and anatomy. Manages and supervises athletic training staff, students, and student workers. The ability to drive a vehicle (campus or non-campus) on behalf of university business.

Responsibilities

  • Injury care and prevention
    Administers and oversees the care, prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries to all student-athletes. Provides specific clinical care as assigned by candidate in conjunction with team physician.
  • Student-Athlete Clearance and Return to Play
    Coordinate the pre-participation clearance process as well as the approval of student-athletes return to competition at the direction of the team physician. Maintains student-athlete insurance information. Makes appropriate physician referrals and coordinates appointments. Communicate with physicians and coaching staff regarding the injury status of athletes.
  • Scheduling
    Scheduling of athletic training coverage for practices and competitions at multiple home and away sites. Travel may be required. Assist athletic department with hosting of athletic events.
  • Financial Oversight
    Develops and manages athletic training facility budgets and policies to maintain optimal health, safety and welfare of all constituents. Coordinates the purchase and use of all equipment and supplies needed for the operation of the athletic training facility in accordance with State and University Policy.
  • Coaching, Training, Instruction
    Assist with the development and maintenance of emergency action plans for all sites and venues, assists with education of athletics staff on all EAP’s and other medical policies, ensures all coaching staff is first Aid/CPR/AED certified, education of athletes on injuries and injury prevention.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree required. Graduate of an accredited Athletic Training Education Program, Master’s Preferred.  5 years proven experience as an athletic trainer. College Football experience preferred. Proficiency in computer software applications: word, excel, office, google, etc. BOC ATC certification, and/or licensure if required. First Aid/CPR/AED for the professional or equivalent. Strong personnel management, verbal and written communication skills with a variety of levels of staff. AHA or ARC instructor certification. 

 

Possession of current and valid U.S. driver’s license appropriate to the type of university vehicle and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Driving Record (MVR) as stipulated in the Vehicle Guidelines and Procedures Manual administered through the office of Environmental Health and Safety. Annual clearance of MVR check through the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.
