Assistant Director for Academic and Bar Support

Overview

The Assistant Director for Academic and Bar Support works to support students in their academic activities within the Law School. The Assistant Director will collaborate with the Assistant Dean for Academic Support, the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and the Assistant Dean for Academic Services and Registrar to ensure the highest quality academic and personal experience for all students and will assist in designing and implementing all aspects of the academic support, bar support, experiential learning, and bar admissions functions within the Office of Academic Affairs. This position will assist in identifying and working with students in need of academic support, at risk of poor performance either in the curriculum or on the bar exam.  The position will also assist in staffing the growing academic support and bar exam preparation program through direct student work, curricular support, student programming, and executing initiatives to improve bar passage and student outcomes.  This position will also assist in managing student participation in the externship program.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct service to students in the academic support program to help diagnose and support students who are at academic risk as measured by their first semester and first year grades.
  • Advise law students, both in groups and individually, on academic and bar admissions matters.
  • Provide ongoing support to the Academic Excellence and Bar Preparation programs and curricula.
  • Teach or co-teach workshops and classes in support of academic and bar support efforts.
  • Maintain records on the legal externship program and communicate with site supervisors regarding student placement and performance.
  • Assist the Assistant Dean for Academic and Bar Support’s efforts to maintain, analyze, and produce requested reports on bar examination results and effectiveness of bar preparation program.
  • Assist the Assistant Dean for Academic and Bar Support’s efforts to maintain current information on the bar admission requirements and bar examination requirements in all relevant jurisdictions.                                                                   
  • Assist the Assistant Dean for Academic and Bar Support in overseeing curricular course components of experiential learning, developing and implementing curricular courses and opportunities to enhance students’ learning through practice experience and critical reflection
  • Support the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Assistant Dean for Academic Services and Registrar as needed.

Qualifications

Juris Doctorate (J.D.). preferred. A candidate with a Master’s degree in educational counseling and several years of experience at the graduate level may be considered. Related prior work experience in an institution of higher education, preferably an ABA accredited Law School is desirable.
