Director, Technology Transfer

Overview

The Office of Technology Transfer manages the protection of intellectual property rights for the university, maintains all relevant compliance requirements, and works to commercialize university inventions. The incumbent will take the lead in the evaluation of invention disclosures, securing intellectual property protection for selected disclosures, marketing intellectual property, negotiating licenses and other technology commercialization activity. The incumbent will advise faculty, students and staff on intellectual property matters and will educate faculty about the technology transfer process. The incumbent will work to ensure compliance with research agreements, federal guidelines and other obligations that the university has with respect to inventions created as part of the research enterprise. Incumbent will manage an Export Control program, to include training and licensing. 

Responsibilities

Manages the protection of University intellectual property rights and maintains the university’s legal agreements (NDAs, MTAs, etc.) needed to facilitate the commercialization of the University IP. Responsible for all university record keeping and contractual reporting obligations, including iEdison and other federal invention reporting as required, and timely notification of and election of title to inventions. Manages all aspects of university Export Control program. Contributes to development of, organizes, and implements strategies for marketing technology and inventions. Identifies potential commercial partners and assists in development of appropriate licensing strategies including the preparation of non-confidential summaries and confidential technical information for marketing purposes. 

 

Handles daily administration of the patent portfolio and supervision of prosecution of patents by outside counsel. Performs technical and legal analyses of inventions and evaluates the technical merit, patentability, and commercial potential of inventions arising from research activities conducted by the university and advises administration. Maintains comprehensive patent files, maintains a database of all patent expenses and revenues, and ensures that the university complies with its obligations under technology-related agreements and statutes.

 

Qualifications

A Master's Degree. Minimum Work Experience: 5 years of experience in technology transfer, preferably in a university setting with 2-3 years of management experience. Excellent analytical, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are required. Demonstrated skills in handling complex inter- and intra-organizational issues in a timely manner and managing multiple projects simultaneously. General knowledge of technology transfer and detailed knowledge of the laws and regulations that relate to patenting of inventions is essential. Knowledge of licensing and business principles is desirable. Ability to interact creatively and harmoniously with coworkers and inventors in multiple technology areas.
